Nico Iamaleava, the former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback, has officially announced his departure from the program following a dispute over his name, image, and likeness (NIL) compensation.
The 2024 season saw Iamaleava lead Tennessee to a 10–3 record and its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance, throwing for 2,616 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Despite his on-field success, tensions arose between Iamaleava and the coaching staff regarding his NIL deal, which was reportedly valued at $8 million over four years when he joined Tennessee.
The situation escalated when Iamaleava missed practice sessions ahead of Tennessee’s spring game in April 2025.
This absence, coupled with ongoing contract negotiations concerning his NIL agreement, led to his decision to enter the transfer portal.
Head coach Josh Heupel acknowledged the evolving nature of college football and emphasized that no individual is bigger than the program.
Following his departure from Tennessee, Iamaleava has reportedly committed to transferring to UCLA. UCLA, entering its first season in the Big Ten under new head coach Deshaun Foster, is looking to bolster its quarterback position.
The Bruins’ current quarterback options include senior Ethan Garbers and Appalachian State transfer Joey Aguilar.
Garbers threw for 2,727 yards with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in the previous season, while Aguilar amassed 6,740 yards, 56 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions over two seasons with the Mountaineers.
Iamaleava’s decision to transfer marks a significant shift in his collegiate career.
His time at Tennessee was highlighted by impressive performances, including setting a school record with 314 passing yards in a single half during a game against Chattanooga in August 2024.
Despite the challenges faced during his tenure, including a notable struggle against Florida in October 2024 where he threw for 169 yards with no touchdowns and one interception, Iamaleava’s potential was evident.
As Iamaleava transitions to UCLA, the college football community will be watching closely to see how he adapts to the Big Ten conference and contributes to the Bruins’ aspirations in the upcoming season.
His move underscores the increasing influence of NIL agreements in shaping the careers and decisions of college athletes.
