All about Betty Harp who raised the star athlete to become one of the fastest sprinters of America.Sha’Carri Richardson was raised by her aunt, Shayaria Richardson and grandmother, Betty Harp. Both played an instrumental role in shaping her career and Sha’Carri claims she wouldn’t be what she is today if they were not there for her.Richardson was born March 25, 2000 in Dallas, Texas and was raised by Shayaria and Betty Harp. She refers to her aunt as her mother and calls her grandmother ‘Big Momma’. The 24-year-old hasn’t publicly spoken about her biological mother much, except revealing during the 2021 Olympic Trials that she was informed by a reporter about her death.

Shayaria Richardson was a track runner and had won many medals in her career. While no information about her grandmother’s career is available in the public domain, it was Harp’s words and her aunt’s medals that pushed Sha’Carri towards the success she has achieved today.

In an interview with Teen Vogue in 2022, Sha’Carri Richardson revealed that she found her aunt’s medals on a plaque made by Harp and asked her grandmother for a similar one. The reply came:

“’Well you got to do something to get some medals!’ And honestly from then on it was just like, ‘If you want to do something, if you want to be great, you got to put your all into it,’” Sha’Carri recalled.

Harp has been Sha’Carri’s biggest supporter throughout her collegiate and professional career. After winning the 100m title at the 2021 U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials, she went straight to Harp to share an emotional hug. The same gesture was spotted at her 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Sha’Carri Richardson clocked 10.86s to win the 100m finals at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. As soon as she received her flowers, she ran into the stands, holding back tears of joy until her head fell on her grandmother, Betty Harp’s shoulders.

Harp has been a constant in her granddaughter’s life. From early days to college life at LSU to shining inside Hayward Field, or last year’s World Championships, Richardson’s grandmother has kept her ‘grounded’ yet inspired her to do better things in life.

“From Day 1 up until now,” she explained, “always being in my corner, no matter what I did, no matter if it was good, no matter if it was bad.”

Sha’Carri Richardson stormed to a world-leading 100m time at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Again going back to her grandmother, who was standing in the Hayward Field stands, to share an emotional hug, it was probably more emotional than in 2021 because of all that had happened in between.
