Trade Proposal:Red Sox Steal Controversial Former Yankees Pitcher On Shocking $70 Million Deal
The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees may have the best, most heated rivalry in all of baseball. Over the last few years, the San Diego Padres’ rivalry with the Los Angeles Dodgers has gained some steam, but it’s still not even close to the hatred between the Rox Sox and the Yankees. This winter, that rivalry stretches into free agency as the two opposing teams have very similar targets, including Corbin Burnes and Juan Soto.
Before the stars sign with either of the two sides, Boston has already stolen a former Yankee, albeit a controversial one, on a one-year deal. On Tuesday morning, Jon Heyman of the New York Post announced that the Red Sox had agreed to terms on a one-year deal with veteran flamethrower Aroldis Chapman.
The deal is worth just over $10 million for the 2025 season.
Chapman spent last year in a seventh- or eighth-inning role with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He began his career with the Cincinnati Reds before being moved to the Yankees, where he threw nearly 300 innings over seven seasons.
The flamethrower has also pitched for the Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, and Chicago Cubs during his 15 big league seasons.
While he’s not the same arm that he was in 2015, Chapman posted a respectable 3.79 ERA in 2024 while clocking fastballs in the triple digits quite often.
An important thing to note here: If Chapman gets over $10 million a year, Kirby Yates, Blake Treinen, and other one-year deal candidates are going to cash in this winter.
