Alien: Romulus Already Found The Perfect Way To Keep A Sequel Interesting..
Alien: Romulus is the latest film in the long-running Alien franchise, taking the series back to its roots and telling the story of a group of people trapped on a spaceship, trying to survive against a seemingly indestructible foe. Romulus is one of the best-reviewed films in the franchise, and its box office success has led to confirmation of an Alien: Romulus sequel. The franchise has had its ups and downs, and hopefully, the latest entry can serve as a blueprint for how to keep the franchise feeling fresh. While the film isn’t perfect, Romulus boasts some very interesting and unique creative choices that could well influence future installments in the franchise, especially with how the film uses the titular aliens. With the franchise being over 50 years old, there needs to be constant evolution to avoid the films feeling stale, and thankfully, the latest film has provided a perfect template for Alien: Romulus’s sequel to follow.
Alien: Romulus’ Sequel Needs More Interesting & Creative Monsters Like The Offspring. One of the biggest successes of Alien: Romulus was the Offspring, a brand-new type of Alien that was created from the black goo that first appeared in Prometheus. The reveal of the creature was quite a big surprise, as Romulus was meant to emulate the original Alien, which features just one Xenomorph, but at the end, the film swung hard out of left field with this crazy amalgamation of human, Xenomorph, and Engineer, alongside multiple traditional xenos. The Offspring also appears after the survivors escape from the Renaissance and the threat is seemingly neutralized, adding to the shock factor of the creature’s appearance.Outside the Offspring’s excellent design in Alien: Romulus, the creature works because it is different from what has come before. Alien is a long-running franchise, and despite many of the films being great, a lot of them follow the same basic story structure, which can lead to them feeling too similar. The Offspring is a great symbol of the series’ willingness to experiment with creatures outside the classic Xenomorphs, and the franchise needs to keep that up if it hopes to prevent itself from feeling boring. The original Alien remains one of the best Alien films, in large part because, when compared to most other properties in the franchise, it is quite simple and more straightforward, telling the story of Ripley and the crew trying to survive an alien attack. However, the sequel, Aliens, came out a few years later and introduced a ton of new lore and monsters, specifically the Xenomorph Queen, greatly expanding what was possible in the universe. If Romulus is Alien, then its sequel should take inspiration from Aliens, and expand upon everything set up in Romulus, including the Offspring.
