Ricky Gervais surprised even himself by winning a Golden Globe last night.
The comedian and actor took home the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television award at the 81st Globes for his Armageddon special on Netflix, and later posted a picture (above right) on X (formerly Twitter), with the caption “I f***ing won!”
Gervais defeated favorite Chris Rock, nominated for his Selective Outrage special, as well as Trevor Noah’s Where Was I, Amy Schumer’s Emergency Contact, Sarah Silverman’s Someone You Love and Wanda Sykes’s I’m An Entertainer. Five-time Globes host Gervais didn’t attend the bash at the Beverly Hilton. He had earlier posted to say he did not expect to triumph, writing: “Won’t win, but it’s nice to still be up there in the mix, flying the flag.”
Jim Gaffigan accepted the award on his behalf.Gervais’ special, which came out on Netflix at the end of last year, saw The Office creator riff on the end of humanity, political correctness, family weddings, funerals and A.I. The taping was criticized for including a skit on terminally ill children, which led to a Change.org petition being launched to have it removed. In the joke, Gervais says he doesn’t burst into hospitals and say, “‘Wake up, baldy’” to cancer sufferers while making videos for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Gervais called out the outrage as “faux offense” and added: “I’m literally saying in the joke that I don’t do that. But people have a reaction. They don’t analyze it. They feel something – that’s what offense is. It’s a feeling. That’s why ‘I’m offended’ is quite meaningless. What do you want me to change?”
The win was Gervais’ fourth at the Golden Globes, having previous taken home trophies for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy for The Office in 2003 and Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Extras in 2006.
