The biggest night in film has come and gone as a swath of actors descended the red carpet for the Oscars. While some big names rolled out for the awards show, all Irish eyes are on our very own Cillian Murphy.
The 47-year-old Cork man won the award for Best Actor for his performance as J.
Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Murphy has snagged himself plenty of awards so far this season for his role in the Nolan flick, including a Golden Globe and a Bafta – with many slating him for success at the awards show, and rightfully so.

Staff at Irish production company Element Pictures are also celebrating at the Oscars after Poor Things received four Academy Awards.
The Yorgos Lanthimos film has snagged nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Hair and Makeup, and Best Supporting Actor, and Best Costume Design.
Dublin cinematographer Robbie Ryan had gotten a nod for Poor Things, for the Best
He previously received an Academy Award nomination for the same category working with Yorgos Lanthimos again for The Favourite in 2018. The Dublin man lost out on this award, however.
Sadly, Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal missed out on a nomination for their work in All of Us Strangers with Barry Keoghan also being snubbed for his role in Saltburn.

Emma Stone won Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in Poor Things. This is her second Academy Award win.

Oscars attendees forced to walk to carpet as protestors shut down traffic
The Academy Awards experienced a traffic jam when protestors shut down the road.
While making their way to the Dolby Theatre, celebrities were forced to get out of their cars and trek on foot to the red carpet. Hundreds of pro-Palestine protestors, who are calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, showed up in large numbers to block the road. They carried Palestinian flags and signs, while shouting “ceasefire now” and “free Palestine.”
Some protestors danced in the streets as they played music and chanted a call for action. Many stood in front of cars to block their entry. A Tesla was also damaged after insisting on driving through the protestors’ cones and blockades.

Poor Things secures three awards for Best Hair and Makeup and Production and Costume Design
Poor Things secured its first award of the night for Best Hair and Makeup. The team consists of Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Weston.
Shortly after, the film also scooped up the award for Production Design followed by costume design.
Poor Things was made by an Irish-owned production company, Element Pictures. Co-founders Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe are up for an award of their own tonight, in the Best Picture category.

The Academy ‘holds a seat’ for Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift, who is a member of The Academy, is not confirmed to be attending the Oscars but does have a seat waiting for her.
An executive producer of the show Molly McNearney extended Taylor an invite to the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
She told IndieWire: “Listen, we all love Taylor. She’s the best cheerleader you could ever possibly have in any audience, whether it’s the NFL or an award show, so if she wants to get on a plane and come to the Oscars, then we’ll hold a seat for her, 100 per cent.”

Oscars fans fume at Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘terrible’ jokes
Jimmy Kimmel made sure to make jabs at the celebrities in the room at the 96th Academy Awards.
The host marked his fourth time as host for the prestigious event by mocking some of the biggest names in the audience.
Among those was Robert De Niro and his large age gap with his girlfriend. Jimmy joked that the first time De Niro played a role alongside Jodie Foster in 1976’s film, Taxi Driver.
He then said that she is “now 20 years too old to be his girlfriend,” aiming for the 35-year difference between Robert and Tiffany Chen.

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel’s suspected pay for the gig has been revealed and it might be less than you think. Back in 2013, The Hollywood Reporter suggested hosts should be paid between $15,000 and $25,000.
Kimmel told viewers six years ago that he made the bottom of that scale, admitting: “I got paid $15,000 to host the Oscars.”

Where to watch the Oscars in Ireland: Channel and start times confirmed
The ceremony will be broadcast on ITV1 with none other than Jonathan Ross hosting the proceedings.
While there is no live red carpet broadcast from an Irish channel, you can tune into ITV1 if you have Sky TV or Saorview. You may be able to watch the proceedings live on YouTube on ABC.
But for those who don’t fancy staying up to watch it live, RTE will be showing all the best moments from the ceremony on Monday evening.
