Manchester United legend Teddy Sherringham has claimed that Liverpool are firmly in the Premier League title race – despite initially being unsure of the Reds’ chances.
Liverpool have made a blistering start to their campaign this season under Arne Slot with three wins from three. Fans have also been buoyed by the Red’s style of football under their new boss, as well as their defensive resilience which has seen them yet to concede a goal.

After harbouring doubts over the Reds’ participation in this year’s title race, Sheringham now believes Liverpool are right in the mix due to Slot’s quick adaptation to life on Merseyside. The Premier League title winner also thinks the Dutchman has handled the enormous job of taking over from Jurgen Klopp in a “really clever way”.
Slot was tasked with the unenviable task of succeeding Klopp after the legendary German called it a day after nine years at Anfield. However, with the feel-good factor currently swarming Anfield, the former United striker has revealed that he has been enamoured with the 45-year-old’s rhetoric and calm demeanour as much as Liverpool fans have.

Speaking at the launch of Ladbrokes’ “Gaffer of all Accas”, Sheringham shared his tips for this year’s title battle. “I think there’s three teams capable of winning the title this year. Man City, Arsenal and, while I was unsure about them, with the new manager coming in, I think Liverpool will be up there,” he said, before adding: “Arne Slot seems to have settled in very nicely. I loved his way of talking.”
Sheringham has also been impressed with just how Slot has gone about taking the reins from such an iconic figure as Klopp. The German brought huge success to the red side of Merseyside, including a Premier League title and the Champions League. However, the ex-West Ham forward believes Liverpool fans will overjoyed with the club’s choice of successor and how the new man has paid his respects to their former manager.
“He mentioned Jurgen Klopp in a really clever way; he acknowledged that the fans loved Klopp, he said he loves him too, and he assured the supporters he wouldn’t be changing a lot,” he said. “I bet they couldn’t believe their luck, when he said that. You know, he just dropped that line in beautifully, for me. I thought it was just fantastic, he’s handled the whole situation brilliantly.”

Slot’s acclimatisation to Anfield has been helped by the team he inherited. Despite a few outgoings, including Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip, the former Feyenoord coach has taken over a squad that won the League Cup last year and one that comfortably finished third in the Premier League, largely intact.
Since his arrival, Slot has only added Italian star Federico Chiesa to the mix. However Sheringham thinks a little freshening up won’t hurt their chances. “There wasn’t a lot wrong at the club, to be honest,” Sheringham said. “Things can always be tweaked, especially if you’re heading into a new season having not won the league in the previous year.”

Just how successful Slot becomes remains to be seen. Nevertheless, Sheringham doesn’t think the new man in charge is “stupid” enough to try and emulate Klopp and believes he has the “perfect” countenance to take Liverpool into a fruitful new era.
“There was purpose in Jurgen’s ways, Liverpool fans loved him, and Slot obviously isn’t stupid enough to come in and try and do things his way, and change things up. His approach, and his acknowledgement of Klopp, is the perfect way to keep his players, and the supporters, on side. They’re definitely in the title race.”
